Shane DS holds down "s" and "t" sounds without dulling the voice underneath. Most de-essers reach across the whole top end when a sibilant lands, so the vowel loses weight along with the hiss. In SPLIT mode Shane DS ducks only the sibilant band, leaving the rest of the signal where it was — the ess comes down, the voice does not change character. BROAD mode is there when you want the older, simpler behaviour. The detector is tuned for voice rather than broadband level, so it reacts to sibilance rather than to whatever happens to be loudest. There is also a constant-reduction mode that applies a fixed amount of gain reduction regardless of how loud the sibilant is, which is useful when the source itself is uneven. Controls: THRESHOLD, RANGE, FREQUENCY, Q, ATTACK and RELEASE, with a sidechain high-pass and a LISTEN switch so you can hear exactly what the detector is hearing. Gain reduction is shown on a VU meter, with an output level meter beside it. It was built for bright pop and close-miked rap, where an EQ lift or a fast compressor has already made the top end spit.
