“Putting It in the Pocket Explained®” explores the techniques used to create grooves that feel natural, expressive, and rhythmically engaging. In this course, Larry Holcombe demonstrates how timing, feel, and performance decisions affect the overall groove of a track. Course extras include downloadable loops and WAV files used throughout the tutorials so you can follow along. The training begins by defining what it means to play "in the pocket" before comparing quantized performances with live playing. You'll then explore different swing values and how they can be used to introduce groove and shuffle into programmed beats. Next, the course covers syncopation, along with techniques for placing parts ahead of or behind the beat to create either a more urgent or more relaxed feel. Additional lessons demonstrate how natural velocity and tone contribute to groove and how to recreate these characteristics when programming parts. The remainder of the course explores groove templates, groove extraction, sidechaining for rhythmic movement, musical compression, polyrhythms, and combining these concepts to build cohesive, groove-focused productions.
