“Synthwave Sound Design Explained®” shows you step by step how to create the defining sounds of synthwave from scratch. In this course, Thomas Cochran demonstrates how to design the basses, chords, pads, leads, and arpeggios commonly found in the genre using a selection of virtual instruments and effects. The series begins with an overview of the genre and its characteristic sounds. You’ll then learn how to build staple synthwave bass patches, including an Outrun-style bass and a Juno-inspired stab bass. Along the way, you’ll see techniques such as using modulation to shape tone and add vintage character. Next, the focus shifts to chord and pad sounds, including brass stab chords, Juno-style chord patches, lush modulated pads, and DX7-style keys. The course then covers lead and arpeggiated sounds, such as vibrato leads, classic Juno arps, and Outrun-style arpeggiators. Throughout the training, practical sound design techniques are demonstrated that can be applied to other hardware or software synthesizers. The virtual instruments and effects used in the course include: Xfer Records Serum TAL Software TAL-U-NO-LX u-he Diva u-he Repro 5 Arturia DX7 V Ableton Live built-in effects FabFilter Pro-Q 2 FabFilter Pro-R Waves H-Delay FabFilter Saturn Final patches created during the course are included as downloadable extras.
