“Exploring Electronic Music” introduces newcomers to the foundations, characteristics, and production elements of several popular electronic music genres. In this series, Tyler Coffin guides you through the stylistic differences that define each genre while demonstrating key sound design and production concepts. The course begins by outlining the approach for exploring multiple styles through a single “base song,” which is gradually adapted to reflect the traits of each genre. You’ll first examine classic electronic styles from the 70s and 80s, focusing on their signature sounds and production techniques. From there, the training moves into House music and its variations, followed by Techno and Trance, highlighting what distinguishes each style. Modern aggressive EDM is then explored, along with Hip Hop-influenced EDM such as Trap and its crossover into other electronic and rap-based forms. The series concludes with strategies for blending genre characteristics to create hybrid productions. By the end, you’ll have a clearer understanding of what defines major electronic music styles and how they differ from one another.
