Kiln is a synthesizer for basses, 808s, leads, pads, keys and plucks. Each of its three oscillators plays a wavetable you scan through, an analog shape that morphs from sine to pulse, or a sample you drop on it, with up to 16 unison voices, and a sub and a noise source sit underneath. Two filters run in series, parallel or split, and either one can be Glass, a resonator that gives any sound a struck body you shape by material, size, strike point and damping. For the low end, every voice has its own drive in six characters, from Soft and Tube to Fold and Fuzz, and Low Keep holds the sub clean below a frequency you set while the drive works above it. Knock sweeps the pitch into each note like an 808, glide can be even or exponential, and Clean Legato slides without clicks. On the master, Bass Mono keeps the lows centered and a clipper holds the peaks. Chord Glide moves each note of the next chord from the nearest note of the last one, so chords slide like a section of players instead of jumping, whether you let go, play legato or hold the sustain pedal. Four envelopes, four LFOs that can fade in after each attack, random and chaos sources and a 48-route matrix add movement, and the arpeggiator has six modes with swing and step probability. Nine effects finish the sound, from EQ, compression and saturation to delay and reverb. The 683 factory presets open in a Library that sits over the controls and leaves the keys live, so you can click a sound, play it, turn its macros and step to the next one. Narrow the list by type, from Bass and 808 to Keys and FX, by words such as Dark or Glide, or by the favorites you star. Anneal takes an audio file you drop in and searches, on your own computer, for four editable patches that come close to it. Kiln also reads MPE controllers and Scala or MTS-ESP tunings. AU, VST3 and AAX on macOS; VST3 and AAX on Windows. Installs and updates through MuseHub, with no license key. Requires macOS 10.15 or later on Intel or macOS 11 or later on Apple silicon, or Windows 10 or later, 64-bit.

What’s new

  • Kiln 1.1 adds 59 new factory sounds and a new Library you can play while you browse, sorted by type, pack and character, with the best sounds first. Chord Glide is rebuilt to glide like an analog poly, every page now has the glass face with about forty new controls, and six wavetables lose a DC offset that thumped at note starts. Projects made with Kiln 1.0 open and sound as they did.
