Euphonium Reviews

To provide more detail, I love this euphonium sound. MuseScore needs euphonium, and I'd say this is pretty good. There are some issues that probably have been addressed but I think it is valuable coming from another user. I write some concert pieces, but also some marching band and drum corps pieces as well, but the music of the marching arts requires a higher demand of music from the euphonium section and low brass in general. Here are some issues I have encountered. For the record, this all happens when I turn the default vibrato off (since I do not want it for a more unified and projected sound for the euphonium section): - When holding out, for example, 2 tied whole notes, without writing a downbeat on the next measure, it plays an unwritten downbeat using the same note it started with. If the held out chord was F, A, and C, it plays an unwritten downbeat with that chord. - The staccato articulation is played at full length, as if there isn't a staccato marking there. This happens with and without vibrato. I wish the sound produced, when notating a staccato, would be shorter like the other brass instruments of MuseSounds. - Notating a staccato creates a louder sound. With or without vibrato. - Some moving notes overlap and create a grace note into the next measure. I think this happened with and without vibrato. These are smaller things, besides the first problem mentioned, but I would greatly appreciate if it were to be fixed. Overall, I like the warm and lyrical sound of this euphonium sound, it's just the aforementioned things ruin it a little bit. It does sound way better than having to use Trombones a3 or a high tuba part to substitute for the sound of a euphonium!

I love most of this, and I do not play the euphonium so this may be an issue stemming from my own lack of knowledge, but I do find it odd that volume skyrockets when notes are marked at staccato. It hurts the quality of many staccato sections in music I’ve written. Other than that, this sound pack is awesome and I am so happy we have something like this finally in MuseScore. Bravo!!

I have been using this for a while and the only issue I found was with crescendos and diminishes. I found that once it reached the mf-mp range it would start to overlap notes. Other than that, it is a significant improvement that I really needed.

When I want it to play at mp the notes clip into each other

Partner Response: Hi Have you managed to reach out to support? We can’t quite replicate what you are explaining here and would love to hear some examples. Thanks

I bought this to do some brass band arranging and I am pretty disappointed with the sound quality. The instrument isn’t in tune from octave to octave. The notes themselves - both slurred and tongued - just kinda bleed together without a lot of clarity. When playing with another euphonium, the instruments don’t line up at all. Overall, the sound is very mechanical, thin, and robotic. Compared to the other brass sounds I’m hearing, this is a total let down.

Partner Response: We are sorry to hear you aren’t as happy with the instrument as we would want you to be. We are incredibly proud of the both the musicianship and recording quality of this instrument. Using not only one of the foremost players in the world, but also tracking in a custom made scoring hall, overseen by Grammy winning engineers. Tuning is a delicate balance from removing the realism of the performance and making something usable in a less traditional, keyboard sense. That is why every sound was painstakingly hand nudged into place, both to avoid a static and unrealistic sound, and to ensure resulting performance wasn’t hindered. If you believe you may have encountered an issue with either the tuning or overall sound quality. Please do get in touch so someone can further investigate.

I literally just bought this, so these are my first impressions. The tone is nice, especially in the higher range. Slurs and glisses work well too. Areas for improvement: -needs better, fuller tone in the lower register -needs lighter staccato markings (they sound like accents and painfully stick out), especially with "classical style" -slight timing issues on slurred eighth note passages (noticed one time with "classical") -very subtle at times (especially when slurred) -all options besides "classical" don't decres well; once it reaches a soft volume, it pops back up for a split-second

I’ve already given it a big solo part in a band composition I’m currently working on. I haven’t tried all articulations yet — I don’t really need them at this stage — but both the forte and piano dynamics sound beautiful. The legato is smooth and natural; you can truly make music just by letting it sing.

As a Euphonist, I'm glad we finally have this. Super happy with the range that is given. My only requests/recommendations would be to have an a2/a3 or maybe an a4 for this. Articulations and notes at faster tempos are a bit sloppy and some notes stick out. This is a wonderful start though!

I'm pretty glad to have this, but it could use a small tweak. First of all, the staccato does not "staccato" well as it still sounds like it holds the note for its intended duration. I rewrote Gustav Holsts' Mars Bringer of War and used the euphonium and the staccato didn't work well with the Mars motif.

F#4/Gb4, for whatever, reason, does not sound entirely right. I can't tell if it's sharp an eensy bit or flat, but it doesn't flow very well with its neighbor notes

The quality of this SF is so much better than the MS Basic one, but have a problem with the staccato, then you use staccato the audio adds a sort of reverb instead.

Partner Response: Thanks for your review. We improved the staccato response significantly with version 0.0.5.

glad to see how receptive they have been to feedback (adjusting the range and looping). This is a really strong start for this sound, however I do think it still requires a little bit of adjusting to really get a pure and warm euphonium sound and some of the articulations when switching between slurred and non-slurred could be a bit cleaner. other than that, the low range could definitely be extended down to an F, and a euphonium section would be a great addition.

I need to tweek with the mixer more than I enjoy, but that's not terrible. The range could be wider. That said, this is a nice euphonium. A Euphonium section would be nice, too, but I'm just happy y'all have this. Cornet(s) and Flügelhorn(s) (in Jazz, British Classical and German Classical styles) would be good brass editions, too. Also, if EbbandFlow has a website, I'd love to check out anything else they've done!

As a euphonium player, this plugin is an absolute godsend, and I will most certainly be utilizing this in my works. However, I do have quite a few suggestions that can be made to further improve the plugin. -The range could definitely be expanded upon. Many upper-level works with euphoniums, especially solo euphonium pieces, will go both above and below the current range of E2 to Bb4. Personally, Bb1 to D5 will work great, but F1 to F5 or larger will be amazing. -Dynamics are a bit on the softer side, especially in the forte+ ranges. I know it can rarely be as loud as trombones or horns at the same dynamic level, but it should be able to hold its own much better than it currently is. -Euphonium section option! a2, a3, or a4 will work, and would be great for wind band pieces. -Articulations don't seem to be functioning properly. Staccato notes are still played long, while accents don't really have that heavier attack. -Sustains should definitely be longer. The ~6 seconds it's at right now feels too short. Despite what others are saying, I haven't had any issues with slurs, even after subjecting it to some fast passages meant for woodwinds. Overall, this is a great start for this plugin, but would love to see this be further developed and refined in the future.

Partner Response: Thanks for your kind words and honest review. We are constantly looking for ways to improve MuseSounds. With versions 0.0.4 we added extended ranges and increased sustains with loops. Version 0.0.5 improves staccato.

It's OK. I still will continue to use the Berlin Brass Tuba as my Euphonium sound until new updates for this drop. Slurs make fast passages skip notes; fast passages are the main feature of the Euphonium, without it, it's lacking. Hopefully, feedback of the initial release allow it to be better, I will be waiting.

Range on the high end is definitely lacking (C is a minimum, but up to high F is recommended, and lower 4-valve notes should be included as well). 6 seconds is definitely too short of a time for sustains, going based on "realism", at least 10 seconds should be there, but looped samples should've been an option. I would also like to see 2-4 Euphonium ensemble for concert band use. But very good start, and quite consistent sound.

Partner Response: Thanks - loops and infinite lung capacity are on the way. As well as some bug hunting into cropped ranges. Thanks for being part of this initial release and helping making it better and better.

Loving the sound, we're finally getting something the community has been dying for. I do have a few nitpicks. I feel like articulation should be looked at a lot more. There isn't really any emphasis on Accents, & I feel like Staccato markings don't actually change the sound. These changes would be super duper beneficial for something like a march or a concert band piece. Otherwise, the general blending with the rest of the musesounds sounds great!

Partner Response: Hey Thanks for your input - there a whole host of attack types and we will investigate why you aren’t able to access them and address asap. We are also working on some exposed videos showing them in action. We did nothing short but drive one of the worlds premier players absolutely mad in making him play in every way imaginable. He may never want to play the Euph again, but at least we all can.

Thank you for making this sound! I feel like it has a lot of potential. Here are some suggested improvements to make it even better: - pretty limited range (E2-Bb4) for a euphonium. This instrument has such a huge range that is constantly being utilized. A range of Bb1-D5, would be more reasonable for this sound. - Has some weird glitches and clarity issues in slurred passages - VERY soft in louder dynamics. - random note stick-outs during faster runs. That being said, the tone is great, and the vibrato is very characteristic. It is so cool to see that the euphonium is getting the attention it deserves on MuseScore.

The FREE museounds TUBA goes up to C5. And here the PAID musesounds EUPHONIUM only goes up to Bb4. Understand that's only a whole step but especially since this is called a SOLO euphonium in the promo art that it would go higher. It can't even go up to the height of notable euphonium repertoire. (Schoenburg Op. 43a Theme and Variations Var. 5) This could have been SOOOOOO good and it doesn't even do a thing you would expect it to. I write/arrange Tuba-Euph ensemble music, too, and you really need that higher range sometimes.

Partner Response: Hey Thanks for getting in touch. This feels like a very easy adjustment for a forthcoming update. Thanks again

In it's current form, it works, but it has some issues such as: it is too quiet at low dynamics, and messed up playback during crescendos. I hope these issues get fixed soon.

Partner Response: Thanks for getting in touch. Do report any issues to support so they can investigate and try replicate any potential bugs.

Please make the sustains loop, other than that it seems like a pretty good MSE, nice with the mic positions

Partner Response: Love to hear it. Loops are on the way! Do add breathe marks to stop your players turning blue though.
